Froilan Rojano, New Chair of DCS

The College of Computer Science faculty welcomes Mr. Froilan Rojano as new Chair of the Department of Computer Science (DCS). Mr. Rojano earned his Master of Science degree in Information Technology from the De La Salle University – Manila in 2004. He is currently an Assistant Professor and has been teaching in the Department of Computer Science since June 1996. Mr. Rojano is also a technical consultant in the Treasurer's Office on matters of Database administration and Software development. Mr. Rojano officially starts his two year term as DCS Chair today, June 1, 2011.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Joshua Martinez for his 6 years of dedicated service as DCS Chair.

Ateneo de Naga hosts the 11th Philippine Computing Science Congress

The Ateneo de Naga University hosted the 11th Philippine Computing Science Congress last 4-5 March 2011. Dr. Eduardo Mendoza of Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany, is this year`s keynote speaker. He gave a talk about Systems Biology and Bioinformatics, in particular, about "Building an Information Platform for Natural Products Research." Dr. Art Graesser of University of Memphis (USA), Dr. Ryan Baker and Dr. Joseph Beck of Worchester Polytechnic Institute (USA) are plenary speakers and talked about about Affective Learning Technologies. Dr. Yung-Cheol Byun of Jeju National University (Korea) talked about Smart Grid computing in Korea.

ACM ICPC Philippine National Programming Competition 2010

The Ateneo de Naga University, through its CHED Center of Development funding, hosted the fourth Philippine National Inter-Collegiate Programming Competition (ACM ICPC Philippine National Programming Contest 2010) last November 20, 2010. The event is organized by the Computing Society of the Philippines and the College of Computer Studies of Ateneo de Naga. Dr. Rafael P. Saldana is this year's Contest Director while Dr. Allan A. Sioson is this year's Deputy Contest Director and Local Organizer. Tertiary students from all over the Philippines converged in Ateneo de Naga to compete in solving 10 computing problems prepared by a board of judges headed by Dr. Pablo R. Manalastas of Ateneo de Manila University.

The top three teams all came from UP Diliman. They will represent the Philippines in the upcoming ACM ICPC Asia Regional Contest to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The top three teams are:

Tapel, Fabia, and Sioson to present papers at PCSC2011

The paper of Allan A. Sioson and Glenn G. Fabia entitled "Generating Simulated cDNA Gene Expression Data for Microarray Experiments using Loop Design" has been accepted for oral presentation in the upcoming 11th Philippine Computing Science Congress to be held at Ateneo de Naga University, Naga City on March 4 - 5, 2010. Their research and participation in the conference is funded through the DOST-MINP Database project awarded to Dr. Sioson. The paper of Salvador S. Tapel III and Allan A. Sioson entitled "Multicam Motion Capture for 3D Animations with BrightColored Markers" has been invited for presentation as Research-In-Progress paper.

ADAAF, ACM-ICPC, and Animahenasyon

The College of Computer Studies hosts two national events and one major departmental event this November.

The Department of Computer Science in cooperation with the Network Operations Center prepares for the hosting of ACM ICPC Philippine National Programming Contest on November 20, 2010 (Saturday). ACM ICPC stands for Association of Computing Machineries International Collegiate Programming Contest. ACM is one of the oldest Computing organization of the world. Dr. Rafael P. Saldana of the Ateneo de Manila University is the Contest Director while Dr. Allan A. Sioson is the Contest Deputy Director and Local Organizer. This year's Contest Pool of Judges is composed of esteemed faculty members from different Universities. The ACM ICPC PNPC's Chief Judge is Dr. Pablo R. Manalastas.

The Department of Digital Arts and Computer Animation presents the 9th Ateneo Digital Arts and Animation Festival on November 17 to 20, 2010 at the Arrupe Hall.

The Ateneo de Naga University, through the Department of Digital Arts and Computer Animation, will host the 4th Philippine Animation Festival, Animahenasyon 2010, from November 23 to 26. This event is sponsored by the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc., and is the biggest Animation event in the Philippines.
